Oct 2008, nine people took a free knitting class at the South Waco Library taught by teacher Jill Quick. To continue learning, the Waco Knitters club was formed afterwards.
Today Waco Knitters is mainly a social club with no fee or commitment. Over 80 people actively participate with around 25 people at each twice-a-month meetup.
The group meets twice a month at local libraries and once a month for happy hour/dinner. Various speakers and demonstrations are held at the meetups. Occasional 'extra' group activities are offered like HOT Fair demonstrating and teaching crochet at Mayborn Museum "Christmas in the Village".
Each year, group ministries are chosen with optional participation. For 2014, Providence Hospital baby hats (1114 made to date), Friends for Life's "Gifts for Grannies" (100 made to date) and the VA Hospital Veterans ward (24 patients, 24 hats made to date) were selected to share with the local Waco community.
